San Francisco, Calif., -- July 8, 2009 -- Transpera, the largest mobile video delivery and ad-network in North America, today announced performance data revealing the impact of Michael Jackson’s passing on mobile video consumption. Transpera reports immediate spikes in mobile video views across sites within their mobile network where Michael Jackson news, video and information was available. Transpera reports a 108% increase in video views on sites with Jackson content during the June 25th announcement of Michael Jackson’s death. On July 7, 2009, the day of Jackson’s memorial service, mobile video views surged 88% above video view norms for sites that carried Jackson content.
The spike in video views confirms the growing popularity of the mobile device as a mean to access time-sensitive news and information. According to a Q109 report by comScore, Inc., a leader in measuring the digital world, the number of people accessing the mobile Web doubled from January 2008 to January 2009. In fact, 35 percent of those mobile Web users in did so daily.
“The concept of having to wait for ‘film at 11’ is a thing of the past as audiences look to their mobile phones to access video clips of breaking news, celebrity and entertainment updates, sports highlights and more,” said Frank Barbieri, CEOO and founder of Transpera. “As the nation mourns the passing of an entertainment icon, they turn to video on their mobile to stay informed and feel connected, anytime, anywhere.”
